Before Nixon even started eating solids, I knew I wanted to make his food for him. I love knowing exactly what is in his food, that it isn't processed, and that he is getting as much nutrition as he can from what he is eating. It is actually really simple and fun! Above is a picture of some avocados that I mashed up. I then put them in ice cube trays, freezed them, put them in a big ziplock bag and keep them in the freezer. Then we just take them out and use them as we go. It is really easy because I can make a big batch at once, (usually once a week) and then have it all on hand ready to go.

Nixon LOVES his food! He can eat a whole banana with 1/3 cup of cereal mixed with it at one sitting. He has also started eating pureed green beans and LOVES them. Last night he was getting mad because I wasn't getting them into his mouth fast enough. If I use frozen veggies, like I did for the green beans, I just cook them for a few minutes, blend them up, and put them in the ice cube trays. It's super easy because you don't even have to wash or peel them if you use frozen veggies.

These are pureed carrot "ice cubes" all ready to go in the freezer. I washed and peeled the carrots, cooked them, and then blended them up and added a little water until it was the consistency I wanted.

Carrots, green beans, bananas, and avocados....

This is homemade rice cereal. I took brown rice, ground it up in my wheat grinder into a powder, and then cooked it on the stove. I keep a bunch of the powder in a plastic container so I don't have to get my grinder out very often. This is what we started Nixon on, and he still can't get enough of it.
I know that by feeding our baby this way is a little more work, but it is SO worth it to me! And if you make a bunch at once, it really doesn't feel like it is any harder. I didn't even mention the $ savings! I haven't calculated it out, but I know that baby food from the store can be anywhere from $.50-$1.50 a jar. I can make a huge batch of pureed carrots with a bag of carrots that costs $2 that will feed him for 1 1/2 weeks. You do the math!
I had a couple of friends interested in this so if you have any questions let me know!! I would love to talk you into doing this :)
Wow! I love the idea of putting it in the ice cube trays....do you just warm it up in the microwave?
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what we usually do. You can also take them out overnight in the fridge to thaw them out, either way..
ReplyDeleteI love this Im totally doing it! what kind of mixer/blender do you use!
